Yesterday, we had 160 beginner band students from grades 5, 6, and 7 attend instrument workshops at Mount Royal University. The students were broken into groups according to their instrument type, and had a 2 hour session with clinicians that specialized in that particular instrument. They were taught how to open their cases, put together their instruments, care for them, proper playing position, and how to play the first few notes.
This was our first year using MRU to work with our beginner band students, and we were thrilled with the quality of the instructors and program: the feedback from students was incredibly positive.
We’d like to give a shout out to two grade five clarinetists, who came to the band room during their lunch break to check on their instruments and discuss the accessories they want to purchase for them. Their enthusiasm and pride in their accomplishments warmed our cold, volunteer band parent hearts.
